A dozen organisations, institutions and businesses namely: Crédit Agricole, EDF, ENGIE, Eurogroup Consulting, Lidl, Mirova Foundation, Orange, Schneider Electric, Transdev, CCI France and France Digitale, are joining forces with Make.org to launch an initiative entitled ‘Urgence Sobriété Énergétique’ (Emergency Energy Sobriety). Following a broad public consultation that begins on 4 October, they have pledged to collaborate to come up with concrete solutions for rapidly reducing energy consumption in France. Over and above the urgency of the situation, they aim to help society as a whole move towards sustainable energy efficiency.
Against the background of climate crisis and the consequences of the war in Ukraine, energy sobriety is no longer elective. Public authorities, businesses, citizens… all are acutely aware and ready for action. But two conditions must be met for this tremendous challenge to succeed:
- To have a real impact on a national scale, individual efforts are essential, but only coordinated action by society as a whole will provide a response commensurate with the challenge.
- While there is a real sense of urgency to forestall economic and social tensions this winter, the challenge goes much deeper: the measures taken today must be a springboard for society as a whole to adapt to crises and climate disruption for the long term.
Brought together by their shared convictions, a dozen institutions and companies are joining forces with Make.org to launch the Emergency Energy Sobriety cause, which will begin on 4 October with a mass consultation of hundreds of thousands of French citizens. The will of the people will be translated into commitments within the organisations of this coalition, and into concrete actions on a national scale.
The aim is not only for these players to respond collectively to an emergency situation, but also for us all to work together to achieve sustainable energy sobriety.
The three stages of this initiative
- From 4 October to 20 November 2022: public consultation
For almost two months, hundreds of thousands of French people will be invited to use the Make.org platform to answer the question ‘How can we all work together to reduce our energy consumption?’ At the end of this survey, a report will reveal the citizens’ consensus, that is, civil society’s priorities for moving collectively towards energy sobriety. - December 2022 – January 2023: co-development of actions and commitments by organisations and companies and at national level
Work will be carried out at the level of each organisation and each company to undertake or continue its energy transition. At the same time, work will be carried out jointly with all partners and citizens to design concrete and sustainable projects at the national level. - January 2023: presentation of results and action plan
The results of the consultation and the commitments of the collective action plan will be revealed at an event in January 2023, and presented to the Ministry of Energy Transition. In June 2023, a review of the commitments and impacts will be unveiled.
