Results of our call for research projects alongside the French Foundation for Biodiversity Research (FRB)

Renewable energy constitutes one of the solutions for limiting greenhouse gases, but their large-scale deployment can have an impact on biodiversity. Four research projects have been selected as part of a joint programme entitled ‘Impact of wind energy on biodiversity’ launched alongside the Foundation for Biodiversity Research (FRB) in view to advancing scientific knowledge.

Analysis of the projects was carried out with support from the FRB’s scientific committee and a stakeholder committee in order to guarantee the objectivity, independence and scientific robustness of each one. Helping to select the 4 successful projects were representatives of ADEME, IUCN, EDF R&D, the Association Française des Entreprises pour l’Environnement (EpE), France Renouvelables, Surfrider Foundation Europe, Syndicat des énergies renouvelables, WWF France and Mirova employees with expertise in financing renewable energy.

  • BRIBAT: Designing an operational framework for the effective implementation of multifactorial wind turbine flanging algorithms for the benefit of chiropterans, aka bats (Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle).
  • CEMARB_DC: Impact of electromagnetic fields on the developmental biology and behaviour of Scyliorhinus canicula, or small-spotted catshark, in the context of offshore wind installations. (Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle).
  • Chiro_EolHab: Impact of wind turbines on the use of habitats by bats over time and in context: implications for impact planning and prediction (MNHN and Audiccé).
  • EOLRAP: Modelling the flight behaviour of birds of prey to improve avoidance and reduce the risk of collision with wind turbines (AMU and Engie).

The results of this research will be presented at the end of 2024.
