Promoting economic development through access to green energy and water in Africa

To meet the challenges of energy renovation in France and access to green energy elsewhere in the world, Watt For Change and Mirova Foundation have decided to join forces. The aim of their collaboration is to combine their complementary expertise and co-finance jointly selected projects.

Issues

All over the world, energy is an essential driver of economic and social development as well as a determining factor for standards of living.

Worldwide, 775 million people lack access to electricity, three-quarters of whom live in Africa. Electricity costs in West Africa are among the highest in the sub-Saharan region, a situation that deprives 220 million people of electricity.

Actions

Watt for Change, the VALOREM Group’s Endowment Fund and Foundation, works in France and around the world to combat energy poverty and access to renewable energies.

Watt for Change and Mirova Foundation jointly fund green energy access projects around the world. Since 2021, 39 projects have been co-financed, including 15 projects currently underway and 24 projects completed in 9 countries of intervention (Benin, Togo, Cameroon, Madagascar, Republic of Congo, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Niger). Contribute to improving living conditions, enabling resilience and empowering the most vulnerable by using energy as a lever.

The projects supported are based on the development of renewable energies, coupled with other devices such as methanization or biofuels to meet the challenge of electrification and access to energy in rural areas. Both accessible and environmentally friendly, these technologies enable the creation of micro-enterprises, provide a reliable source of energy for healthcare facilities or improve conditions for access to education.

This is the case, for example, of the MOI JEU TRI structure, whose Val’IDEE – End-of-life management project for solar sector products in Togo for approximately 8,000 beneficiaries, which promotes the development of the first fruits of an economically sustainable solar waste management sector in Togo was co-financed over two years.

Beyond financial sponsorship to supported projects, extra-financial support with sponsorship of skills of Valorem and Mirova employees is offered to project leaders.
